History.
The oldest, painted bowls from the 16th and early 17th centuries, are embossed with foliage in medieval and Renaissance style. It is possible that they have their models in imported painted wooden vessels, but all the preserved bowls with this paint seem to have been produced in Norway, and they are probably urban workers. In the cities and in upper-class environments, wooden drinking vessels are being replaced by vessels made of glass, metal and ceramics. Beyond the villages, rose painting flourished in the 18th century. Painted beer bowls become very popular, and a number of variations and local characteristics are developed in the decor. The use of beer bowls continued into the 19th century, and in some villages beer bowls could be used at weddings up to the middle of the 20th century.
