This is a Macon Stamp Water Mark Detector made especially for early stamp collectors to help them determine the various watermarks found on postage stamps.
By placing the stamp face down in the black plastic container and filling it with benzene, wood alcohol or sometimes lighter fluid, and while, holding the lid in good light like a magnifying glass and then by looking through each of the three coloured blue, red and green plastic windows, the wavy water marks embedded on the stamp would appear. Watermarks were used to discern where a particular stamp was printed, what paper was used, and in some cases the rarity.
The Macon Detector, is marked N.Y. City, Patent Applied For. This is a unique item that is hard to find in modern times and definitely harkens back to the days when stamp collectors spent hours pouring over their collection sorting them into endless categories and sub categories sometimes of stamps that looked unremarkably similar. But, that was the hobby.
This detector is in good condition and holds no strange smells or shows signs of decomposition.
It is from the 1930's
