This handcarved Norwegian mangle board, dated 1983 and signed R.L O.L, reflects a long Scandinavian folk tradition. Known as a “mangletre,” it was historically crafted by a man and presented as a symbolic engagement gift.
The board is richly carved and features a sculpted horse shaped handle, symbolizing strength and loyalty. Traditionally used as an ironing tool for smoothing linens, mangle boards also served as deeply personal love tokens, demonstrating craftsmanship and commitment.
According to tradition, a man had to carve the board himself before presenting it to his chosen bride. If she accepted, they were engaged. If she refused, he had to carve a new one for any future proposal. This custom reflects historic gender roles and the cultural significance of woodcraft in Norwegian society.
The piece remains in good vintage condition and makes a striking decorative wall display while preserving its cultural meaning.
