History.
Kjänge is a drinking vessel for beer. Kjenger has primarily been used in Hordaland and Sogn, and in Voss it was almost the only drinking vessel used for beer. Most preserved shoes are from the 18th and 19th centuries. A kjenge from Sogndal has a shape and decoration that may indicate that it was carved in the early 17th century or the end of the 16th century, and this is probably one of the very oldest preserved. The kjenge is shaped like a round or oval bowl with two or three hanks erect. (Three handles occur very rarely.) The handles are often shaped like stylized horse heads, but a number of other shapes also occur. The handles are usually symmetrical, but not always. One group has a dragon's head as a handle on one side and a tail on the other. This type has also been particularly popular in souvenir production in the first half of the 20th century. Kjenger is carved from a single piece of wood, but later imitations in ceramics have also been made.

In some places, such drinking vessels are called staup, but in the literature, staup is preferably used for similar drinking vessels that have been made. Boots of a similar shape to the Norwegian ones have been used in northern Sweden and in northern Russia. The Swedish shoes are often called kåsa and the Russian skobkar.
