History.
Butter form is a form to decorate butter in. The term is also used for the butter itself when it has been removed from the form. The forms are preferably made of wood with carved decoration. They are often made as a four-, six-, octagonal or round tower with a pyramidal top. The sides can be hinged or tapped into each other. There have also been used butter forms made of whole wood with a bowl shape, butter forms cut like a fish and butter forms in metal with other decorations.

In order to be able to more easily loosen the butter from the mold when it was to be opened, it is said from Budal in Sør-Trøndelag that they could put the mold in warm water for approx. an hour and then in cold water overnight before it was to be used. If they sprinkled a little salt in the mold before putting in the butter, it would also be easier to get it out when it needed to be used.

Butter forms have been used throughout the villages for Christmas, and for weddings and funerals. For weddings and funerals, the guests had to contribute a shipment of food, and here butter was an important part. The decorated butter was taken out of the mold and placed on a stick on the party table. Such a form of butter could vary in size from around one to around three kilos. On the farms, they often had several molds of different sizes, and the size could also be varied by making a large or small foot of butter under the mold itself. Closest relatives had the largest forms, and the best butter was placed in front of the bride and groom. Some molds had carved years and initials for the owner, and the guests knew who had delivered the butter from the decoration on the mould. Butterfish were often used for Christmas.

In some places, such forms have been used for cheese - especially for brown cheese. These also have carved decorations on the inside that make an impression in the cheese. It can be difficult to distinguish these cheese forms from butter forms, and some are probably used for both butter and cheese.
