This 18th century Norwegian hand-carved box is a remarkable example of primitive Scandinavian folk art. Crafted from pine with a dome-top form, it displays geometric chip-carving and its original black-painted surface, naturally worn after centuries of use. The box retains its historical soul with a warm patina and beautifully aged texture.
Inside the lid is a rare devotional paper print surrounded by period handwritten ink notes, offering a personal and sacred glimpse into Norwegian rural life in the 1700s. The box also features hand-forged iron hardware, including its original working lock. Early handmade repairs remain visible and only enhance its authenticity and character.
A masterpiece of early Norwegian folk art, this chest reflects the devotion, simplicity, and craftsmanship of 18th century artisans. The carved sunburst and rosette patterns were created using the traditional Nordic chip-carving technique known as karveskurd.
