Known as a “poor man’s candle holder,” a rushlight holder was traditionally used to grip thin rushes, splints or tallow-soaked lighting materials before modern candles became widely affordable. This example is crafted from wood with hand-forged iron fittings, a round wooden base, upright stem and original iron gripping mechanism. The warm aged wood, darkened burn marks, surface cracks and rustic patina give it a strong sense of age and rural use.
