This antique Norwegian tine box, dated 1722, is a remarkable example of early Scandinavian folk art and bentwood craftsmanship. Tines were traditional lidded boxes used in Norway for storage and symbolic gifting, especially in wedding traditions. This large oval example retains its original hand painted decoration and historic charm.
The surface shows beautifully worn rosemaling-style motifs with red, green, white, and black brushwork on a blue ground, along with initials and the date “1722” painted on the lid. The wood displays age wear and natural cracks from three centuries of life, while the handle is a later replacement. Despite this, the tine remains structurally sound and full of authentic primitive character.
A rare early 18th century Norwegian folk art piece perfect for collectors of Scandinavian primitives, museum-level décor, and historic cultural artifacts.
