This is an antique Norwegian rosemaling chest, known as a kiste, dated 1903 and originating from the Telemark region. It features hand painted floral decoration and acanthus scrollwork in a classic Telemark style on a deep reddish brown background.
The front of the chest is inscribed with the name Augusta Moldestad and the year 1903. Chests of this type were traditionally used for storing personal belongings and textiles, and dated examples were often made to mark important life events such as confirmation.
The chest retains its original painted surface with a pleasing patina. There is visible, honest wear consistent with age, while the overall condition remains very good for an antique folk art object of this period. The key is not included.
