Step back into the golden age of rural Scandinavian resourcefulness with this remarkable antique candlestick, created from an earlier 17th century wooden scale weight and later repurposed in the 19th century as a practical candle holder. It is a compact but powerful example of old world utility, craftsmanship, and survival.
Originally used as a counterweight for a traditional Bismar scale, the hardwood base was carefully carved and fitted with poured lead in the underside to achieve its working weight. Generations later, a country craftsman gave the piece a second life by boring the top and fitting it with a hand rolled iron candle socket. The result is a deeply characterful primitive object with rich dark patina, geometric zigzag chip carving, and the kind of wear that only centuries of use can create.
Today, this make do candlestick makes an exceptional display piece for collectors of folk art, primitive antiques, and early European utilitarian objects. Its substantial feel, sculptural silhouette, and smoky aged surface make it especially appealing on a desk, shelf, mantle, or in a rustic interior display.
