Step back into the golden age of late 19th century Norwegian folk art with this beautiful antique tine box, dated 1892 and hand painted in traditional Os style rosemaling. With its elegant oval bentwood form, soft cinnabar orange ground, and bright floral ornament in blue, green, yellow, and white, this is a charming and highly decorative example of Scandinavian painted woodcraft.

What makes this particular tine especially appealing is the sentimental hand painted inscription across the back panel: “Forært, Er altid saa kjært,” an old Norwegian Danish phrase meaning “A gift is always so cherished.” Together with the prominent date on the front, this strongly suggests it was made as a meaningful presentation gift, likely for a wedding, confirmation, or another important family occasion. The lid is decorated with flowing scrollwork and floral forms surrounding the original bent wooden handle, while the tall side finials give the silhouette added character.

The box was made to hold small treasured belongings such as keepsakes, letters, jewelry, or other personal items.
